Regional Visual Artist Workshop Fall Schedule
Beginner/Intermediate "Media Smorgasbord" Classes... try something new!

               Visual Artist Workshops

The Charles County Arts Alliance is very grateful to Betty Carney of the Corner Studio for providing us with studio space for the purpose of conducting Regional Visual Artist Workshops.  CCAA Member Connie Miller is always hard at work contracting regionally well-known artists to teach workshops at the Corner Studio.  Through her efforts, the CCAA has been able to offer 6 - 7 various workshops each year, usually breaking during the months of December, January, and February due to the unpredictability of winter weather.

These workshops have become quite popular.  They usually range in price from $30 - $45 for a 3-6 hour single day class to $110 or so for a 6-week (2-3 hours per week) series offering.  CCAA members receive a discounted rate.  Class sizes are limited to about 12 - 15 students due to space limitations.  To allow for greater participation, the CCAA incorporated some Saturday workshops (click here to read the Maryland Independent's story), and is expanding upon that option during the fall of 2008.

So, the CCAA would like to hear from you:

  • Are you interested in attending Visual Artist Workshops here in Charles County?

  • Would you be available on weekdays, evenings, or Saturdays?

  • What are your areas of interest (drawing, painting, sculpting ...)?

  • What media do you prefer (watercolors, acrylics, oils ...) ?

  • Do you consider yourself a beginner, intermediate or advanced artist in this area?

The CCAA is always looking for artists who teach as well.  If you are a teaching artist, please contact us if you would be interested in learning more about serving as a teacher for one or more of our Regional Visual Artist Workshops!

Watercolors:  Composition and Shadows

About the Instructor:    Susan Moses

Maryland born artist, Susan Moses, found art to be a natural outlet for expression at an early age.  Her interest in painting began in childhood though her mother's encouragement, where they would paint together on location. This led to the study of art education and a teaching career of sixteen years.

As an art educator, she worked in multiple medias, focusing on jewelry & batik. Later she turned her attention to watercolor, sketching and pen & ink. Almost any subject matter intrigues her. Working on landscape, seascape, floral arrangements & portraits, both animal and human, for galleries, commissions & shows keep her busy.

Holding a masters degree in Fine Arts from The Maryland Institute of Art,   Baltimore , MD , she continually seeks growth in her painting through participation in classes, workshops, & museum visits. Now that her children are raised, she is transitioning to full-time artist, working out of her home studio. Her interest in 'plein air' painting reawakened, she delights in capturing the atmospheric effects of sunlight and shadow in nature.

She is a member and show chair, exhibiting in the juried shows at:

  • Rockville Art League, Rockville , MD

  • Montgomery County Art Association, North Bethesda , MD

  • Strathmore Hall Arts Center , North Bethesda , MD

  • Washington Water Color Association

The artist's exhibitions have included shows at:

  • The Chevy Chase Women's Club, Chevy Chase , MD

  • The Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockville , Rockville , MD

  • Ratner Museum , Bethesda , MD

  • Brookside Visitors Center , Wheaton , MD

Faux Finish

About the Instructor: Sandra Germann

As a professional artist and business entrepreneur, painting murals, faux finishes and fine art are a way of life for Sandra Germann. "A solid commitment to create a beautiful work of art begins with an idea; the concept leads to a creative and exciting process of composition, design, and artistic rendering. The entire process is a thrilling experience to see an idea come to life, to transform a blank and barren space into a beautiful and colorful vision."  In 12 years of experience, Sandy has transformed many barren and blank walls, columns, and canvasses into skillfully executed works of art.  She has painted murals and faux finishes for many clients over the years:  corporate commercial, contractors and private residences.  Sandy will teach workshop attendees various faux finish techniques which can then be used on walls of a home, surfaces for the set of a play, etc.

About the Instructor: Freda Lee-McCann

Born in Washington D.C., Freda began her studies of Chinese landscape and floral painting, at age 12, with the masters C.P. Huang and C. B. King. At age16 she attended the University of Maryland in College Park to study western art and mathematics, resuming her studies of Chinese landscape painting in 1982 with the old master C.C. Wang of New York City for 22 years until his death at age 96. In addition to being a master of Chinese painting in the old tradition, Mr. Wang also had one of the most extensive collections of original Chinese art. This allowed Freda to study both from a great living artist as well as from the great masterworks from the Sung Dynasty of the 11th century through the Ching Dynasty in the early 20th century.  Freda’s work has been shown in MD, VA, DC, and NY as well as being published in two books.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 20, 2008

Charles County Arts Alliance Sponsors FREE "Interactive" Paint Party

On Saturday, December 6, 2008, the Charles County Arts Alliance, in partnership with the Corner Studio, will offer two (2) FREE opportunities for teens and adults to come play with paint!  The first session will be held from 10:00 am - 12:30 pm and the second session will take place from 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm.  The purpose of these parties is to introduce painters to an acrylic paint that doesn't dry as quickly as traditional acrylic paints.

"Unlike traditional acrylics, all 75 of these "interactive" colors do not suddenly form a skin.  Interactive changes the painting process, giving you plenty of time to blend and rework and giving you more creative freedom.  The patent-pending formulation allows even touch-dry paint to be reworked or ragged-off to blend or reveal layers.  Archival quality and lightfast, the intense colors dry to a satin-like finish without a plastic look or feel and minimal color shift." (www.chromaonline.com)

Whether you are a seasoned artist or a novice, these paint parties are designed for you.  Just bring brushes and a surface on which to paint (ie. canvas or watercolor paper) and join in the fun.  Simply call or email the Charles County Arts Alliance (301-392-5900; info@charlescountyarts.org) to register for either Session I or II.   Directions to the Corner Studio will be made available to each participant at time of registration.  Each workshop is limited to a maximum of 15 participants, so don't delay... join the party today!
