The ballfield becomes a battlefield in Richard Dresser's hilarious comedy as two mismatched little league coaches lead their team of aspiring big leaguers from their first tentative meeting of the spring to the climactic championship game.

Exhilarating victories, heartbreaking defeats, and interminable rain-outs challenge the tough, blue-collar, win-at-all-costs veteran and the newcomer, both to the town and to baseball, as they battle over how best to lead the team.

DRAMA / MYSTERY: Los Angeles, 1943. A bloodthirsty killer is stalking the beautiful starlets of Tinseltown. Fearing her life is in danger, Lucy Murray goes to the one man she knows can crack the case, a hard-boiled private eye names Abe Van Helsing. But who is the mysterious Count Dracula who has suddenly appeared and what are his ties to the detective? This adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic novel is a film noir retelling of the legend of Dracula, a dark romance mixed with comic relief and gruesome death. Christ Church Concerts will open its new season with Jon Bruno, Baritone, and Alexandra Phillips, Soprano, accompanied by Angela Garvey, on Sunday, September 28, 2008 , at 3:00 in the afternoon.   The soloists will sing art songs followed by a section of sacred duets.

Alexandra Phillips, soprano, and Kevin Gebo, trumpet, will open the program with Handel’s “Let the Bright Seraphim,” an energetic piece requiring agility from both the voice and the trumpet.

Alexandra Phillips, a native of Vienna, Virginia, is a recent graduate of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a Master’s degree in vocal performance and a graduate of the Eastman School of Music.  She most recently performed Joseph Schwantner’s Sparrows with The Contemporary Music Ensemble in Knoxville, where the Knox News Sentinel hailed, “After getting past the clashing sounds of the opening, I can’t imagine anyone singing this gentle, atmospheric piece with its glistening interior spaces more gorgeously than did soprano Alexandra Phillips.”  She also recently sang the role of ‘Amy March’ in Mark Adamo’s Little Women with Knoxville Opera, as well as ‘Jenny Slade’ in Knoxville Opera’s production of Roman Fever during the 2005 Rossini Festival.   Alexandra has performed the roles of ‘Olympia’ in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and ‘Little Red Ridinghood’ in Barab’s Little Red Ridinghood with Shaker Mountain Opera.  She was a winner in the NATS Mid-South Region in 2005, a semi-finalist in the 2005 Orpheus Competition, and was a two-time finalist in the Bethlehem Bach Competition.   Alexandra has performed the roles of ‘Monica’ in The Medium, ‘Laetitia’ in The Old Maid and the Thief, and ‘Gretel’ in Hansel and Gretel with Municipal Opera Company of Baltimore.  She has soloed at the Kennedy Center, the White House, the Folger Theatre, The Washington Arts Club and has performed with Interact Theatre, The Washington Savoyards, the Washington Choral Ensemble, and with the Paul Hill Chorale.  Her performance as soprano soloist for Handel’s Messiah under the direction of Dr. J. Reilly Lewis in Washington, DC, led The Washington Post to write that her voice was “bright and agile . . . a natural to the music.”

Trumpeter Kevin Gebo has been a prizewinner in numerous competitions that include first place in the College Division of the 2003 National Trumpet Competition and the 2003 International Trumpet Guild Scholarship Competition. He placed second in the 2004 International Trumpet Guild Solo Competition and the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Orchestral Excerpt Competition and first place in the Masters Division of the 2005 National Trumpet Competition. Kevin was the Principal Trumpet of the Detroit Civic Orchestra from 2002 until 2005 and was a member of the Young Musician Foundation's Debut orchestra in Los Angeles, CA from 2005 until 2007.  He has performed in concerts with such distinguished groups and artists as Jon Faddis, Lalo Schifrin, Joshua Bell, David Daniels, Burt Bacharach, Chanticleer, the Lyric Opera of Los Angeles and the London Symphony Orchestra. He can be found playing principal trumpet on the Naxos recording of William Bolcom's "Songs of Innocence and Experience" which won four Grammy awards in 2006, including "Best Classical Album".  Kevin Gebo received his Bachelor's Degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Michigan in 2005 with William Campbell and his Master's Degree at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2007 with Jens Lindemann.  Kevin is one of the newest additions to the United States Army "Pershing's Own" Band.

Following the dynamic concert opener, Jon Bruno will sing the beautiful song cycle, “Songs of Travel” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, set to the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson.  The songs trace the thoughts of a wayfarer throughout his life – from the lure of the open road to the sense of what might have been had he remained in one place.  After singing for 10 years with the Metropolitan Opera Chorus, Baritone Jon Bruno began his solo career in December 2002 with a well-reviewed performance at the Washington National Cathedral.  Since then he has been asked to solo numerous times in the Washington region and beyond and is a popular soloist with many of the region's premier musical groups.  In just a few years, Mr. Bruno has performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, The Library of Congress, The White House, The Teatro Colon, the National Cathedral, and The National Gallery of Art.  He also sang the world premier of Libby Larsen's "The Shepherd and the Angel."  He can be heard as a soloist for two of the Arkansas Chamber Singers’ most recent recordings, "The Messiah" and "Magnificat," as well as for the Cathedral Choral Society's two most recent recordings, "Welcome All Wonders" and "Mass for a Sacred Space".  Ms. Phillips will then offer three beloved sacred songs – “Pie Jesu”, from Fauré’s Requiem, “O Divine Redeemer” by Gounod, and “Laudamus te” from Mozart’s Mass in C Minor.  The two vocalists will join forces to sing the Lucia-Enrico duet from Lucia di Lammermoor.

Pianist and organist for the program will be Angela Garvey, organist and music director at Christ Church. Christ Church is located at 112 East Charles Street in downtown La Plata.  There is ample parking behind the church and adjacent county government buildings.  The church is handicapped-accessible.  Admission to the concert is free; donations for the support of the music series will be gratefully accepted.  This program is sponsored in part by a grant from Charles County Arts Alliance and the Maryland State Council for the Arts.  Please call (301) 392-1051 to request a season brochure or for further information.

Basic Tax and Reporting Considerations for Small Nonprofits

Chuck Borek, CPA, JD, MBA, Executive Vice President, Tax Services, Cohen Rutherford + Knight, PC

Attention Small Nonprofits! If your organization has income under $25,000 per year and you’re wondering how to comply with the

Maryland State tax laws for nonprofits, this class is for you. Find out: 1) what bracket your organization fits into and what forms

nonprofits in your bracket need to file; 2) how you know when you’ve graduated to the next bracket; 3) how the personal property

tax form applies to your organization; and 4) whether your organization is exempt from the registration requirement for

organizations that solicit donations. We’ll walk you through each of the forms, both the ones you file once (such as right after you

obtain your tax-exempt status) and the ones you need to file annually, such as the Exempt Organization Fund-Raising Notice and

the Personal Property Return. While the class will focus on Maryland State tax requirements, we’ll also discuss how to file the

new 990 postcard. Attend this important class to make sure you file correctly and don’t compromise your tax-exempt status.
